Typically, this is achieved through a custom rehabilitation plan that involves a number of exercises and drills. While it's sometimes overlooked by some people, rehabilitation is vital following an injury. What Can I Expect from Functional Rehab?
As soon as it's safe, you should begin rehabilitation exercises. At BHFS Medical, we suggest starting rehab after the initial inflammatory phase, which lasts about 72 hours. Most exercises should be done without causing pain; however, there are a few exceptions. Dr. Allen doesn't suggest the phrase "no pain, no gain," as this is often not true as pain is the body's way of telling you to stop or slow down. If ignored, you could do further damage. There are generally three phases of rehab, which include:
- Phase 1: The first phase of rehabilitation involves beginning gentle exercises that promote healing to the damaged area. This is not a phase that should be rushed as it can cause re-injury.
- Phase 2: The second phase of rehab involves slowly loading the injured area to develop tensile strength, which will produce healed tissue that can withstand daily strains and stresses.
- Phase 3: The final stage of rehabilitation is where the injured area adapts and is stressed out during functional exercises that will ensure the damaged area is ready to get back to normal everyday activities.
